Our History

1940

Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design began in 1940 as “Gorman’s”—a Detroit-based reseller of railroad-damaged freight founded by Ben Gorman. While the business originally focused on canned goods, Gorman’s soon pivoted to furniture after Ben recognized the potential in restoring damaged home furnishings. That shift marked the beginning of a decades-long reputation for quality, value, and forward-thinking design.

1965

Ben Gorman sold the company to Bernie Moray, a seasoned furniture executive whose leadership would transform Gorman’s from a local shop into a premier name in fine furniture.

1966

Gorman’s Contemporary Gallery opened in Southfield, Michigan. Showcasing a curated collection of the best contemporary furniture under one roof.

1977

Gorman’s opened its Troy, Michigan location, expanding its presence and commitment to providing premium furniture

1993

The home furnishing industry has named Bernie Moray of Gorman’s as its Retailer of the Year.

2017

Bernie Moray was inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, honoring his decades of leadership, innovation, and lasting impact on the home furnishings industry.

2017

Gorman’s opened a three day clearance center in Farmington Hills, Michigan

2020

Bernie Moray retired after 55 years of leading Gorman’s, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and growth in the home furnishings industry.

Present Day

Gorman’s, now in their 3rd generation of maintaining the family business, has continued to be the style leader for everything home furnishing and interior design serving the metro Detroit/Michigan community for over 80 years
